The Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair is in the process of developing a Mentorship Program for students and teachers involved with research projects. We are in the process of seeking volunteers from University of Utah academic departments and companies and lab organizations with the staff qualified to act in a mentoring capacity.

The science fair hosts students that live in a rich scientific community and we endeavor to have our students benefit from the technical expertise around them. Many of the top participants have had the benefit of mentorship. Statistics show that students linked with active research and development experts, such as university professors and graduate students as well as suitably oriented industry technologists, do better in regional and state science fairs and invariably are more likely to earn the recognition to attend the Intel ISEF. We would like to extend this opportunity to more students that would request technical support.

The role of a mentor is to encourage and support future scientists and engineers. The task need not be a great demand of your time. It could be as simple as a phone conversation or email with the student or teacher. The ideal situation would be to provide laboratory assistance with the student and the research.

If you elect to serve as a mentor, the program will be monitored carefully. Every effort will be made to accommodate the mentor and the student. Students who are provided with the mentorship opportunity become enthusiastic about their research and the fascinating world of engineering and science. Throughout the process students will be required to meet with their classroom teacher and report on their investigations and the general progress of the project.

We will also follow up with you on the overall mentoring process and the progress of the student and the research. Your role in the process is a vital key to the learning experience of the students. A small portion of your time and expertise can make a lifetime of difference for these students. Your willingness to mentor students is greatly appreciated.

Professionals and academics with advanced degrees are encouraged to become mentors. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please fill out a registration form including your area specialty and credentials.

Students interested in being considered for a topic-compatible mentor assignment (personnel available) should register here.

If you would like to be a mentor a child participating in SLVSEF please fill out this form and we will get back to you.
