The Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair will be held March 26th and 27th, 2009 at the Rice-Eccles Stadium Tower (University of Utah campus).
We are currently seeking volunteer assistance for the event. During the SLVSEF there will be volunteer opportunities to help with registration, the safety and display committee, judging projects, assisting with set up and serving the judges and volunteers breakfast and lunch, greeting school groups, and greeting families on the public viewing days. Volunteer task descriptions are provided below.
Registration Volunteers
Friendly, out-going people who enjoy assisting children ages 10-18 will be drawn to this volunteer task. Volunteers should feel comfortable handling a crowd and pulling registration materials from alphabetical files. The registration booths are open on March 26th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Volunteers for this task will be asked to be available from 2:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Safety and Display
The safety and display committee volunteers help to enforce the international regulations for science fair project set up. These volunteers must be able to follow directions and manage paperwork for student projects. These volunteers must also be able to clearly communicate the safety regulations to the participants. The international guidelines will be explained at an orientation prior to the science fair. Safety and Display Committee Volunteers will utilize a checklist and review projects after the student participants have set them up. The SLVSEF staff will also send a set of materials to people who are interested in volunteering for this committee prior to the event.
Food Assistance Volunteers
These volunteers will help set-up and serve lunch and snacks to the judges and volunteers. They will assist staff to prepare and maintain a neat serving area for the snacks and beverages. This shift will run from 11:00-2:00 on Friday, March 27th.
Greeters
Friendly, out-going people are sought to be greeters. Greeters will assist visitors to the science and engineering fair during the public viewing time. The greeters will help to orient school children as they pass through the projects and other activities as well as help orient family groups. The greeters will pass out information sheets and assist at the registration tables. Greeters will also circulate throughout the Level 6 and Tower to insure the safety of the projects and assist visitors who have any questions. The volunteer shifts for greeters are on March 26th from 3:00-7:00 pm, March 27th from 8:00 - 12:00 noon or from 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m. We are seeking approximately 6 volunteers for each shift to help with this task.
