Welcome

The Utah Science Center (USC) is now known as The Leonardo—Science, the science focus of The Leonardo (www.theleonardo.org). The Leonardo will open in the newly remodeled old Salt Lake City Main Public Library Building on Library Square and will take interactivity and personal involvement to an entirely new level.

Targeted to all who will respond to being treated as adults, The Leonardo will involve and empower its visitors to be participants—helping to enhance its exhibits and improve its programs. You are more than a visitor—you are more than a participant; you will help create, enhance, and design the experience.

Hundreds of volunteers have worked for many years to design exhibits, activities, and programs.

Our three ongoing science-intensive programs help provide the experience and the foundation for truly unique and substantive science related programs.

The Leonardo's programs will enable an effective and comprehensive art, culture, and science experience for all participants.

December 15

The 350th day of the year! So what? Well, 350 ppm is the CO2 concentration most feel is reasonable to avoid severe and catastrophic climate change due to global warming. The concentration now is about 400 ppm, so not only do we have to stop increasing CO2, we actually have to produce much less to eventually decrease it to the 350 ppm level. See www.350.org for details. The 350th day of the year is becoming a symbol for the 350 ppm goal.

Less than 4 more weeks of BodyWorlds! Tickets for the final few weeks are going fast. Better get them and come while you can. Jan. 11, 2009 is the last day! And do come and play with us on New Years EveFirst Night!

Science Links! We’re going to start posting links to interesting science videos, articles and more on our links page. If you have ideas for good links to share with others, then please let us know. Our first link is a great video about a dot and a line. Check it out!

Body Worlds activities.  Remember, there are many activities going on at The Leonardo during the Body Worlds exhibit.  See the full schedule here.

Our new Butt Pressure exhibit (new formal name is Under Pressure) received a good test and workout in The Leo Zone at Body Worlds the last month. Those who sat on our ‘magic bench’ were rewarded with ‘Another View of You’ perspective. We’re calling it Duff Art for the Bluff gig (see above). Duff Art and Inside Out will be in The Leo Zone after Dec. 1.

And another good article in the Des News on The Leonardo:

Thanks, Peter Giles!

Diesel truck needed! We need a reasonably powerful, 4 wheel drive diesel vehicle to tow our colorful 25 ft Leo on Wheels-Science trailer throughout Utah Our existing vehicle is old, lots of mileage on it, is a gas guzzler, etc. Can you suggest a gift vehicle or an incredible deal for us? The donor would be appropriately recognized on the truck. We want a diesel vehicle to be part of biodiesel/biofuels exhibits/activities now in the planning phase. Christmas is coming, be generous!

We’ve moved! The Utah Science Center/Leonardo on Wheels offices have moved, with The Leonardo staff, to The Leonardo building. We have generally worked from home or on the road, so it is nice to finally have a place to call home. The mailing address and phones, as well as email addresses, all stay the same for the time being. Our shop continues to be at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education (SLCSE) thanks to our collaborations with the SLC School District.
